The Artois Hound is a medium-sized hunting dog. One of the oldest breeds, today it is distributed mainly in France. It is used for hunting small and medium game and is also an excellent companion dog. They are friendly, intelligent and compliant dogs. A description of this breed will give you an idea of the pros and cons of owning one.
The Artois Hound is also known as the Hound d'Artois or Picard. These names are associated with the regions of Artois and Picard in France, where the first representatives of the breed appeared 500 years ago. French aristocrats used these dogs to hunt foxes, hares, roe deer and wild boars. The breed is tireless, has good endurance and can pursue prey over any terrain. At the same time, having an excellent sense of smell, this hound easily finds any traces.

The Artois Hound is also a faithful companion and friend for the whole family. They are lively, energetic and cheerful. Its good-natured nature makes it unsuitable for use as a guard dog, but it will alert its owner to the approach of a stranger by whining.
The Artois Hound is popular among hunters in its homeland.
The Artois Hound has a balanced temperament, it is affectionate and friendly. They are active and tireless on the hunt, but good-natured and trouble-free at home. These dogs become attached to their owners and strive to please them. They are affectionate and friendly towards other family members. They are very child friendly and never bite. They play with them with pleasure, but do not tolerate them; if they don’t like something, they try to stay away.
Althounds are indifferent to strangers. This is not a very good guard dog, as aggression is not shown. However, thanks to their excellent sense of smell and high sensitivity, these dogs can detect the approach of a stranger in advance and, if necessary, are ready to protect their owner. They are brave, capable, strong and vigilant.
